What is the card?

When you struggle with PTSD you may have flashbacks or can be triggered into a negative reaction by environmental (sounds, smells) or physical events (crowded spaces). People react differently, but the last thing the majority of veterans want at that point is to be surrounded or smothered by people who mean well and want to help. Communication can be adversely affected and this card is to assist in those moments.

Why give them away?

Veterans have served the country with pride and dedication. They have made sacrifices and experienced things that most people would struggle to imagine. More needs to be done to support veterans when they are out of service in these areas. Tommy's Lounge believes that no veteran should have to pay to get help and support, or be supported when in need.

How can I support a veteran?

What is PTSD?

Someone with PTSD often relives the traumatic event through nightmares and flashbacks, and may experience feelings of isolation, irritability and guilt. They may also have problems sleeping, such as insomnia, and find concentrating difficult. These symptoms are often severe and persistent enough to have a significant impact on the person's day-to-day life. - Source NHS.uk

Why only veterans?

At present we only offer these cards to Veterans with prior military service (applicants will have their service verified before being issued with their card. Whilst Tommy's Lounge acknowledges that anyone can suffer with their mental health, our purpose at Tommy's Lounge is to support veterans.

How do I apply for one?

Complete the contact form below with the basic information and the Tommy's Team will be in touch to issue a card upon completion of checks. You can either collect the card in person from Tommy's Lounge in Huddersfield and enjoy a coffee, or we can post it out to you free or charge. We will ask for some information which will be handled in confidence and in line with current GDPR regulations to ensure that any applicant is eligible for a card.

How can I support Tommy's Lounge with this scheme?

We are self-funding this project as well as the running of Tommy's Lounge through donations and support of our allies and visitors.
